The Urban Mobility Partnership was pleased to host the first in a new series of local policy roundtables, starting in Leeds and kindly hosted by UMP member Shoosmiths.
The session brought together a diverse group of voices from across the region, including representatives from West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Transport for the North, Bradford and Kirklees Councils, and the University of Leeds, alongside UMP members.
Held under Chatham House rules, the discussion focused on how to build a more integrated, reliable, and customer-focused transport system – one that meets the needs of growing communities while reducing reliance on private car use.
With new powers and funding being devolved to local authorities, there was a shared sense that this is a pivotal moment to shape the transport system we want, rather than continuing to manage the one we have.
Participants also reflected on the importance of engaging major employers, improving access outside standard operating hours, and reframing the conversation around the cost of inaction – asking not just what change might bring, but what happens if we don’t.
UMP is grateful to all who took part and looks forward to continuing to support collaborative, practical approaches to urban mobility across the UK.
