Smart Cities World interviews UMP founder Steven Stewart on grey fleet reduction

June 3, 2022

Urban Mobility Partnership founder Steven Stewart was interviewed by Smart Cities World following the launch of UMP’s policy paper on grey fleet reduction. He says now is the ideal time to address the major issue of “grey fleet” business travel relying on personal vehicles, with public attitudes shifting post-pandemic and governments reviewing emissions goals after COP26.

Collaboration between mobility providers, local authorities, and national government can deliver near-term solutions through incentives like public transit discounts and technology like mobility-as-a-service offerings.

While local authorities should provide sustainable options like car clubs and bike shares, national government can enable change through tax-free mobility credits and updating Benefit in Kind tax rules. Even small reductions in private car use for business travel can significantly lower emissions, so Stewart encourages highlighting alternatives to shift mindsets.
